Death Wobble
I have had three vehicles with death wobble, a ’55 Studebaker truck, ’77 CJ 7, and a ’93 Chevy one ton truck. With the Studebaker it turned out to be too much toe in. On the CJ I found not enough caster, and also too much toe in. On the 93 the previous owner told me it had death wobble and he could not figure it out, that’s probably one of the reasons it was a free truck. After changing the tires, checking the alignment several times replacing the steering stabilizer, and on, and on, I still could not figure it out. Death wobble at 35, in a small town with small town cops, you do not want to go over that 35 speed limit. Then one day I was replacing a brake line from under the front of the truck. I grabbed the drag link to pull myself out from underneath when I noticed it was really lose. Stupid me, I had never checked the drag link. After I installed a new drag link the toe was at 1/4 inch, and for just about everything I have seen, it should be 0 to 1/8 inch. I reset the toe in to 0, and magically the death wobble was gone. Amazing!
